It’s a bout four years in the making as on Saturday, Adrien Broner takes on Omar Figueroa Jr. in junior welterweight action from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Broner and Figueroa were scheduled to square off in April 2018, but the latter had to pull out due to a shoulder injury.
Broner, a former four-division world champion, has gone through a series of legal issues since he last fought in February 2021 when he bested Jovanie Santiago by a controversial decision. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old vows he’s focused and is taking his career seriously heading into this pivotal contest.
“I’m going in there to try to stop Figueroa,” Broner said in a press release when the fight was first announced. “I’m going to take the fight to him and go ahead and get him out of there. What I expect from him is the same gruesome Figueroa that we always see. He’ll try to make it a rough fight. Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’ll be hard to hit. So, I’ll see ya’ll on August 20.”
Figueroa went unbeaten in his first 29 fights (28-0-1). But then he hit a rough patch losing back-to-back tilts against former welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos, respectively. He cited mental health issues having to do with his most recent showings. Now, he’s gotten the help he needs and is ready to take out the controversial Broner.
“I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life and career, especially now that my mental health is at the forefront of everything I do,” said Figueroa. “Having a clear mind has been the best thing to happen to me. Now I’m able to focus 100% on my boxing career, and I can’t wait to be back in the ring on August 20.”
